GREEN LAND, ice desert...

Greenland is the biggest island on the Earth. Its territory is 6.7 times larger than Poland and 7.8 times smaller from the biggest country – Russia. 84 % of island surface is covered by ice and creates the biggest after Antarctic glacier on Earth. Island was discovered by luck in X century by Vikings and was named as a green land (Grønland). Till today nobody knows, why this name was chosen: maybe coast of island was really green? Or the name suppose to brings the colonizers? Nowadays the citizens of Greenland counts 57.1 thousand of people.

Climate on Greenland belongs to polar and only on the coasts – in the south part of island – it is sub polar. Temperature on glacier very rear crosses over zero Celsius degree, during the winters it could fall to -72 *C. Commonly and very strong blows of wind gives much more stronger felling of cold. Summer time is a rainy (snow) period when the drop of snow are around few meters.

On Greenland, in general lives polar animals: reindeers, polar bear, musk fox, polar wolfs, polar rabbits… also number of birds colony… Practically all animals which have  characteristic color for the island – white. The fact is, that animals settled in the see regions and over 80% territory of Greenland was left without any life.
